The European Central Bank (ECB) has fined the Luxembourg-based entity Euro 1.685 million Banque et Caisse d’Epargne de l’Etat for failing to adequately report risk-weighted assets calculated to measure market and credit exposures.
According to the ECB, the entity underestimated risk-weighted assets related to exchange rate exposures for 17 consecutive months between 2018 and 2022.
The firm did not accurately reflect its US dollar-denominated positions on own funds in compliance with macroprudential requirements. The underestimation of risk-weighted assets means that the bank did not properly calculate its capital requirements and overestimated its capital ratios, preventing the ECB from having a comprehensive view of the risk profile.
